Image Title: The Brush Maker

Scripture Reference:

Description: The brush maker displays his wares around his open store window. He is in the process of selling a clothes brush to a woman who is trying it out. In the background is a city scene with a canal, bridge, a church and houses. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 51:10, though Luiken quotes Psalm 51:12.

Motto:
May everyone seek
The dirty corner.

Poem:
Tidiness removes dirt and dust,
From the neat garment and furniture;
But the best of all is oft forgotten,
The eternal part, the worthy soul,
Where so much dust fell from sins,
That it is splashed, spattered, and covered with dirt.
