Directions for using SBL Style with Endnote 8, 9, or X were provided by Donna Kirking, Product Training Coordinator for Thomson ResearchSoft.
You may download SBL9 from the Endnote Support & Services website.
*Note that these are EndNote 8/9 files and will not be compatible with earlier versions of EndNote. Also, they will be a customization of EndNote 8/9, so they will not have the standard Reference Types settings. This could affect your ability to share libraries with other EndNote users and could also affect your references in future versions of EndNote, requiring you to recreate the customizations of this style.
When unzipped you should have the files below.
1. An EndNote style called Soc Biblical Lit-Notes.ens. With EndNote 8 quit, copy this file into your EndNote 8 Styles folder.
2. An EndNote sample library and its attached data folder. This library is based on examples from the style guide and will help you with data entry questions. You may place these wherever you wish to use them, but they must remain in the same folder.
3. An EndNote reference types file called RefTypeTable.xml. With EndNote quit you will need to place this file in your profile's C:\Documents and Settings\your profile name here\Application Data\EndNote folder. This file will customize the reference types table to add the extra reference types and fields necessary for this style. Please note that this will wipe out any customizations you have made to your current reference types, so you should copy your original RefTypeTable.xml file to a safe place in case you want to return to using it in the future.
*If you have trouble locating the Application Data file under your profile name, the file is probably hidden.
Please follow the instructions to have the Application Data file appear.
1. Open "My Computer"
2. Go to "Tools-> Folder Options"
3. Click on "View"
4. Make sure the "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
There are a number of limitations in EndNote that create problems when working with this style and will require manual editing of the final paper. Some of these are summarized below.
Shortened repeated citations for books with editors instead of authors will include " ed." or "eds." after the editors name.
Conference papers in repeated citations will include parenthetical material that will need to be edited.
Articles in a lexicon or theological dictionary will include the author and title of the article in repeated citations instead of the author and dictionary or lexicon abbreviation.
Bibliographic entries for ANET, COS, and theological dictionaries will have the editors' names formatted according to Editor name conventions in this style (i.e., First Name Last Name) instead of according to Author name conventions (i.e., Last Name, First Name.)
In-text citations are to be used only when citing primary texts such as those in the Loeb Classical Library.
