The strategy for using Endnote with remote databases varies with each particular database. For library catalogs (DiscoverE) and Ovid databases (PsycINFO), you will use Connection Files, but for many others you will need an Import Filter. The ATLA Religion Database is a database that uses an import filter.
Connection files allow you to conduct your search within the Endnote program.
Example: DiscoverE Library Catalog
1. Click "Tools" ->"Online Search " -> "New Search ", or, if you've done this before, select "Emory" from the list of options that appears below "New Search"
2. Choose Emory and click "Connect"
3. Enter your search terms and click search.
4. Endnote will tell you how many results were found.Limit the reference number to
view and click "OK"
5. Select all or specific references to a particular library by choosing "Copy All
References To."
6. Choose a library or create a new library to save these references.
Each database interacts with Endnote differently. Read the instructions specific to that particular database before importing references into Endnote.
Example: ATLA Religion Database
1. Mark references to be saved by clicking on the "Add" link
2. Click on "Folder has items", "Select All" or the specific items you want to export, then "Export"
( )
3. Choose "Direct Export to Endnote, Procite, or Reference Manager" and click save (Endnote must already be running on your computer for this function correctly)
4. Choose the library where you want to save the citations and click save
Note: An updated (10/19/2005) import filter for the ATLA Religion (EBSCO) database is available from http://www.endnote.com/support/enfilters.asp
Download this filter to EndNote's Filters folder, then quit and restart EndNote if it is already running.
