del.icio.us

del.icio.us is a "social bookmarks manager." Just like the bookmarks option on your computer, del.icio.us saves the web addresses of pages of interest. Unlike a desktop bookmark option, del.icio.us allows you to access your pages from any computer, to share these pages with others, and to find pages that others have identified as worth saving. del.icio.us also allows you to label pages with "tags", which are phrases or words that make sense to you as a way to organize your bookmarks. Tags can be bundled under larger headings for ease of consultation.

Getting Started

Visit this page to select a user name and password. You have the option to import posting buttons to your Internet browser to make saving pages and accessing saved pages easier. If you want to upload pages you've already saved in your desktop bookmarks to your new del.icio.us account, del.icio.us has a guide for that.

Saving Pages

With the posting buttons, this is easy! When you're looking at a page you want to save, click the "post to del.icio.us" button and enter any helpful information: a title that makes sense to you, a description of the resource, and tags that will help you find it again. Choose whether you'd like the page to be public or private, then click "save". Alternatively, you can choose to post pages from within your account by clicking "post". The same entry box for description and tags appears.

Sharing Pages

Do you have a page you think we should know about? Tag it for:pitts_reference and we'll receive a notice that a page has been flagged for our consideration. Do you want to know about the pages we add? Add us to your network, and you will see our most recent additions. If you don't want to create your own del.icio.us account, you can also access our recent additions from the Pitts homepage: I am pitts_reference on del.icio.us

Find More Pages

Using the "subscriptions" option in your del.icio.us account, you can be notified of all pages that other users tag in a certain way. For example, to find all pages others tag as "methodist", subscribe to this tag. You can limit subscriptions to come only from certain users, or from anyone using that tag. You can also search across all saved pages from the del.icio.us homepage.
