Participant Biographies


 

The Reverend Doctor H. George Anderson has been Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America since 1995, and for many years has served on bodies involved in ecumenical dialogue. He received his B.A. from Yale University, B.D. and S.T.M. from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, the M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, and thirteen honorary doctorates from various colleges and seminaries. Before taking his present position for the ELCA in Chicago, he served as Professor of Church History at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, SC (1958-70); Director of Graduate Studies, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (1960-70); President of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (1970-81); and President of Luther College, Decorah, IA (1982-95). In addition to his work as translator and editor, Dr. Anderson is the author of numerous articles and several books and pamphlets. He and his wife Jutta Fischer Anderson are the parents of three sons and a daughter.
 
 

Dr. John W. Cook became the President of the Henry Luce Foundation in 1992, after having served on the faculty of Yale University for twenty-seven years, where he directed two graduate programs in interdisciplinary studies and taught the history of art and architecture in the area of religious studies. He received the B.A. from Baylor University; the M.Div, M.Phil., and Ph.D. from Yale University; and the L.L.D. from Valparaiso University. He is an ordained United Church of Christ minister, has lectured widely in North America and Europe, and is the author of numerous books and articles on topics related to art, architecture, and religion. He and his wife Phyllis have two children.
 
 

Rev. Paul J. Philibert, O.P. was ordained priest in 1963 and elected Prior Provincial in 1988. He holds the B.A. from Providence College (RI), the STB and STL/STLr, and STD from the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception (Washington D.C.). Among his academic appointments were teaching posts at Albertus Magnus College (New Haven), Providence College, St. Mary's Seminary & University (Baltimore), and Catholic University of America (Washington, D.C.). In addition, he served as the President of the Dominican School of Theology and Philosophy at Berkeley and Director of the Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame. He is the author of two books and numerous articles and currently serves as prior of St. Dominic's Priory in St. Louis and Distinguished Visiting Professor of Church and Society at the Aquinas Institute, St. Louis.
 
 

Harold C. Skillrud, native of St. Cloud, MN, retired five years ago as Bishop of the Southeastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Prior to that he was a parish pastor in Atlanta and Bloomington, IL. Currently he is serving as part-time Regional Representative for the Board of Pensions of the ELCA. Married with three children and eight grandchildren, he and his wife, Lois, are graduates of Gustavus Adolphus College. He received his MDiv from Augustana Theological Seminary and his STM from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. He has honorary doctorates from Augustana College and Newberry College. For five years he served as USA Co-Chair of the Lutheran/Catholic Dialogue and an additional two years as USA Co-Chair of the Coordinating Committee that reviewed the Joint Declaration on Justification, and was present in Augsburg, Germany, at its signing last year. He was co-editor of SCRIPTURE AND TRADITION, DIALOGUE IX; author of DECADE OF DECISION (LSTC merger), sermons and articles in piublications. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of: Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, Augustana College, Board of Publication of the Lutheran Church in America. His wife and he reside in Atlanta.
