Background

The Hellenistic Moral Philosophy and Early Christianity program unit was formed in 1989. It convened its first sessions at the SBL Annual Meeting as a Consultation in 1990 and 1991. From 1992-1996 it met as a Group with John T. Fitzgerald serving as Chair. It was reviewed in 1996 and renewed by the Program Committee as a Group for a term of three years (1997-1999) with L. Michael White serving as Chair. The group currently meets as a Section.

Interdisciplinary and International
 

The group historically has tried to ensure that a variety of perspectives are brought to bear on its topics. Participation has come from a variety of disciplines with the SBL as well as from the field of Classics. In addition, scholars from countries other than the United States regularly participate. Countries represented include Canada, Denmark, Great Britain, Iceland, and South Africa.
