Scripture Reference:

Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Francesco Erizzo (c. 1565-1646), who reigned from 1631 to 1646. His coat of arms features a band loaded with a hedgehog and the letter E. The left pair of coin faces constitute Erizzo’s 1635 osella. The reverse (above) features an olive tree stirring in the breath of angels, who accompany Mary and the infant Jesus. The obverse (below) depicts a winged, nimbate man-like lion that rests its paws atop a shield, which bears a legend commemorating the fifth year of Erizzo’s reign. The mintmaster, Marc Antonio Malipiero, has his initials engraved at the bottom of the obverse. The right pair of coin faces constitute a medal minted to record the erection of a chapel at the church of Sant’Anna. The upper face depicts the Presentation of Jesus to the Prophetess Anna, while the lower face depicts Saint Mark distracted from his writing by a light shining behind him. Mark’s chair appears decorated with the wings and head of a creature, and water appears at the bottom of the image.
