Description: The sail maker sits under a tree while sewing the canvas of a sail spread out on his lap. In the background is a harbor with large sailboats; in the right background there is a building with an anchor suspended from a signpost. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 104:3. Motto: The swift wind, / Catch it where it’s found. Poem: The sail stretched between boom and mast, /Goes across the sea with ship and men: / oh Man, unfurl, unfurl the sail, /Of the heart’s wishes and desires, /That way the Holy Ghost of the Lord will carry /You to the gold-coast of all salvation.
