Scripture Reference:

Description: Under a roof next to a canal, the wool washer uses a wooden rake to swirl the wool around in a basket that is suspended in the water. In the background is a workshop, where baskets full of wool arrive with a boat and hanks of wool hang to dry. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Isaiah 1:16-18. Motto: The night vanishes, / When the day shines. Poem: The measure of God’s love is full: /A soul, that wants to forsake evil, /Its guilt, like the color of scarlet / Shall be like snow and white wool: /oh Man! oh man! desire to repent /Upon such a friendly word of the Lord. (Translation by Josephine V. Brown, with editorial assistance from William G. Stryker).
