Scripture Reference:

Description: The baker weighs kneaded loves of bread at his workbench. On the floor around him are a sieve, a jug, and a wooden trough. A man gathers straw to fuel the burning oven and a woman with a shopping basket enters the bakery. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 104:14. Motto: He who nourishes the body, / Is for the spirit. Poem: Oh Creator of precious bread, / As sustenance for the temporary life,/ How your generosity has invited us, /To give ourselves as bread to you! /oh Bread, that fell from Heaven, /Satisfy then our soul. (Translation by Josephine V. Brown, with editorial assistance from William G. Stryker).
