Image Title: Dante Meets Virgil

Scripture Reference:

Description: Dante has begged the Roman poet Virgil for his aid against the she-wolf menacing their footsteps. Virgil shows his protection by covering Dante with the protective folds of his toga and leading him away from the wolf and gloomy wood, towards the bright sky in the background. The she-wolf is traditionally identified with avarice, although Dante may have intended a veiled reference to Rome and her Papal Court as well. The engraver, L. Dumont (19th c.), has placed his signature at the bottom left, while the artist Gustave Doré (1832-1888) has placed his signature at the bottom right.
