Description: Lining the top of the left page is the nativity scene, including the baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, shepherds, the three kings, and the heavenly hosts looking down on the manger (Matthew 1; Luke 2). One register below on the left is an illustration of the annunciation featuring the angel Gabriel informing Mary of her role in the incarnation (Luke 1; Matthew 1). Directly across the page on the right, Mary and Joseph escape to Egypt from Herod’s slaughter of the innocents (Matthew 2). On the register below, Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth on the left, and the baby Jesus is circumcised on the right. Lining the bottom of the page is a depiction of the Magi’s visit to the Messiah guided by a star (Matthew 2). On the right page, three scenes occupy the uppermost register. To the left, Herod’s soldiers follow his orders to kill all the boys two years old and under in Bethlehem and its vicinity (Matthew 2). In the center, Jesus is rejected at Nazareth as he preaches in the synagogue (Matthew 4; Mark 6; Luke 4). On the top right, Jesus performs his first miracle by changing water into wine at a wedding in Cana (John 2). In the register below, Jesus calls Matthew/Levi at the receipt of customs on the left (Matthew 9; Mark 2; Luke 5), and calls Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector, down from a sycamore-fig tree on the right (Luke 19). On the two panels below, Jesus is tempted in the desert by Satan in the form of a man with goat horns and hooves on the left (Matthew 4; Mark 1; Luke 4), and converses with the Samaritan woman at the well on the right (John 4). On leftmost panel of the bottom register, the daughter of Herodias holds the head of John the Baptist on a platter as requested by her mother (Matthew 14). In the center, a radiant Christ appears with Moses and Elijah to three of his disciples on the Mount of Transfiguration (Matthew 17; Mark 9; Luke 9). On the bottom right, Jesus overturns tables and expels the money changers and merchants as he cleanses the Temple (Mark 11; Matthew 21; Luke 19; John 2).
