Description: Three illustrated panels line the top of the left page. On the far left, in order to save the outspoken Israelites who were inflicted with venomous snake bites as divine punishment, Moses fashions a bronze snake onto a pole, the sight of which saves those bitten (Numbers 21). In the top center, the diviner Balaam beats his donkey for running into the vineyard walls to avoid the angel of the Lord blocking the path and drawing a sword (Numbers 22). On the far right, Joshua observes the Israelites marching around the walls of Jericho carrying the ark, rams horns, and trumpets per the Lord’s instructions (Joshua 6). In the central register on the left, Joshua and his soldiers look upon the five Amorite kings defeated at Makkedah suspended on poles (Joshua 10). On the right, Samson pulls down the two central pillars of the temple after Delilah delivers him to the Philistines by cutting off his hair (Judges 16). Lining the bottom of the page are three illustrated panels. On the left, the minor judge Jephthah fulfills his rash vow of sacrificing his daughter after defeating the Ammonites (Judges 11-12). In the center, Samson ties foxes tail to tail in pairs before fastening lit torches to them and letting them loose to burn the fields, vineyards, and groves of the Philistines (Judges 15). On the right, Samson carries the doors of the Gaza city gate on his shoulders to the top of the hill that faces Hebron (Judges 16). Three illustrated panels occupy the top register of the right page. To the left, the Queen of Sheba kneels before King Solomon with a great caravan of gifts (1 Kings 10). On the right, Jezebel, wife of King Ahab, is thrown out of a window by her own servants on orders from King Jehu (2 Kings 9). In the center, the chariots of fire and horsemen of Israel take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind as Elisha watches from a distance (2 Kings 2). In the second register from the top on the left, Elijah punishes young boys from the city who mock him by uttering a curse that calls two female bears from the wood to devour the lads (2 Kings 2). Directly to the right, King Nebuchadnezzar watches as Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego are saved from the blazing furnace by an angel of the Lord (Daniel 3). One register below on the left, Tobias son of Tobit journeys to Media with his dog carrying a fish over his shoulder. Tobias is accompanied by the angel Raphael, who instructs him in the apotropaic and healing powers of a fish he killed in the Tigris River (Book of Tobit). To the right, Daniel looks up at the angels sent by God to close the mouths of the lions who inhabit the den in which he is imprisoned (Daniel 6). On the far left of the bottom register, the widow Judith holds a sword and the decapitated head of the Assyrian enemy general, Holofernes, accompanied by her loyal maid (Book of Judith). In the center, Esther, the wife of the Persian king Ahasuerus or Xerxes, kneels before her husband and makes a request for the king and Haman to come to a feast which she has prepared (Book of Esther). On the bottom right, Job rejects the counsel of his three friends as he endures God’s test provoked by Satan (Book of Job).
