Description: A depiction of a bust of Pope Gregory XII, a Roman pontiff during the Western Schism. The toppled papal crown and broken key symbolize the division of the Roman Catholic Church. Above the bust, there is an image of Solomon’s decision to cut a child in half to determine the identity of the true mother. The association between Solomon and Gregory emphasizes Gregory’s wisdom. The engraver, Bernard Picart (1673–1733), has placed his signature at the lower left.
