Description: This engraving illustrates one aspect of ordination to the third of three major orders: priesthood, the seventh and last of a series of ordinations culminating in full priesthood. The bishop, seated on his throne with an attendant priest at his side, speaks to the ordainees kneeling before him. The image is flanked by an ornamental border containing scroll work, pelicans (symbolizing Jesus’s atonement for humanity’s sins), and snails (symbolizing the resurrection).
