In the background, Nathan reprimands David and another man (John the Baptist?) approaches an authority figure. The Latin superscription reads, "A true friend, who censures a wrong doer," and the text below, "Who embraces me like Pylades or faithful Achates? With outspoken words he speaks against you, when deserving." (Pylades was a companion of Orestes and Achates, of Aeneas).
