Image Title: Printer's Device of Sebastianus Gryphius

Description: The printer's device of Sebastianus Gryphius (1493-1556) appeared in a dozen versions but always featured the griffin (a mythological symbol of diligence), an allusion to his name. The motto, "Virtute duce, comite fortuna," is taken from Cicero and may be rendered, "With virtue thy leader, fortune is thy comrade" (transl. H.W. Winger, Printers' Marks and Devices, p. 42).
