Their dog barks at a family with young children and a dog walking along the canal. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing and etching this emblem and for the brief poem that accompanies it (below). The attendant Scripture texts are Isa 40:11 and Mark 10:13-16. With what is love rewarded, / Other than with love returned. / Love can, with pleasure, / Bear and carry the little child: / oh Love, thou art our Origin! / How your Fatherly compassion has / Taken us in your arms, / And carries us to Salvation / (Translation by Josephine V. Brown, with editorial assistance from William G. Stryker) . Click here for additional images available from this book. |
