Reformation Day at Emory, 2001

The fourteenth annual Reformation Day at Emory will be held on Tuesday, October 23, 2001. The full day of events will include musical presentations, lectures, and worship.

The day will begin at 8:30am with registration and coffee and be followed by an organ lecture recital by Professor Timothy Albrecht on J.S. Bach's canonic variations on the hymn, "From Heaven Above, to Earth I Come." Bishop Frank K. Allan, Episcopal Bishop in Residence at Emory, will preach at the morning chapel service, and Ms. Ashlyn Mengel will offer a lecture recital at noon on the topic of sermons in song from the Reformation.

This year's afternoon lecture program will focus on "Called to Common Mission" and the dialogue between the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and the Episcopal Church and will feature presentations by Prof. Martin E. Marty, acclaimed Lutheran theologian and Professor Emeritus of the University of Chicago, and Bishop Frank K. Allan, Episcopal Bishop in Residence at Emory.

The theme for this year's evening concert is Good News to Ev'ryone! and will draw on Luther's Christmas hymn, Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her ("From Heaven Above, to Earth I Come"), our featured chorale in this year's celebration. Commentary at the sixty-minute concert will be provided by Dr. Marty, and the concert itself will include short musical meditatios on Luther's Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her and Johann Sebastian Bach's 1747 organ chorale variations, Einige canonische Varänderungen über das Weihnachtslied Vom Himmel hoch, which Timothy Albrecht, Emory University Organist will perform. The Candler Choraliers will present the first Kessler choral commission as part of their contribution to this year's program. We have requested a liturgical work from renowned Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, and he will be in attendance at the concert.
