Photocopies are provided by Pitts Theology Library as a service to researchers for their private study and use on a fee for service basis. We do not sell photocopies. Photocopies provided may not be further reproduced.
In order to insure the careful handling of archival materials, all copying is done by Archives and Manuscripts staff. The department may set limits on the amount of copying it will undertake. Factors to be weighed, in addition to staff time, include possible infringement on copyright and the fragile nature of the materials.
Researchers are, under certain circumstances, allowed to use personal digital cameras to produce images of archival and manuscript materials for research use. For more information, see our Digital Camera Policy.
An application to use archives and manuscript materials must be approved before photocopying is permitted. A duplication request form must also be completed, signed by the requester, and approved by the reference staff, or, in certain cases, by the Curator of Archives and Manuscripts.
Note that permission to obtain photocopies does not constitute permission to publish the photocopied materials. See our Permission to Publish page for information on obtaining permission to publish materials from our archives and manuscript collections.
The requester must assume full responsibility for any infringement on copyright or for any other legal problems, such as libel or invasion of privacy, which may arise from the researcher's personal or later use of the copies. Persons using manuscripts should be aware that unpublished materials (including letters, diaries, memoranda, literary manuscripts, photographs, films, audiotapes, and materials in digital formats) are protected by the copyright law (Title 17 U.S. Code) and any use beyond "fair use" may be an infringement.
For more information, see our copyright guidelines page.
Please ask a staff member for instructions as soon as the first material for copying has been identified. Do not remove any items for copying until these instructions have been given. A duplication request form must be completed. We also require that all items to be copied be appropriately tagged. Specific instructions will be given upon request.
Photocopy orders of 20 pages or less are usually done on a "while-you-wait" basis. Larger orders, or requests for copies of audiovisual or digitized materials, are done as staff time allows. Researchers may either pick orders up or have them mailed. The minimum charge for mail orders is $5.00. Payment is due upon receipt for most photocopy orders; prepayment is required for large photocopy orders and for copies of audiovisual and special format materials.
