All interested people are invited to join us in the Durham Reading Room of Pitts Theology Library this Thursday evening for two promising lectures. Our current special collections and digital image exhibits in the Durham Reading Room focus on the engravings and poetry of Dutch artist Jan Luiken (1649-1712). On Thursday we will learn more about the artist who created these images and the genre of emblem books in which he worked. Dr. Walter S. Melion, Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Art History at Emory University, will provide a history of the emblem book. Dr. Josephine V. Brown, Associate Professor of Psychology Emerita at Georgia State University and an active volunteer at Pitts Theology Library, will discuss her experience translating the poetry of Jan Luiken. Examples of these translations are available as part of our special collections exhibit on display. Light refreshments will be served at 6:30 PM, and the lectures will begin at 7 PM.
