How far can a class project go? While students at Emory, Matt and Erica Hinton produced a short video about the a cappella music tradition called Sacred Harp or shape note singing. By 2006, that project had become a feature length documentary shown on PBS and sold on Amazon. This week only, Pitchfork TV is showing the film on their streaming video website at http://pitchford.tv
Pitts Theology Library and the Music and Media Library at Woodruff also have DVD’s of the film that can be checked out. Find it in the Pitts media collection at ML3188 .A93 2006 DVD.
To learn more about this compelling style of hymn singing and the community of persons who share it, consider exploring the dozens of Sacred Harp scores, books, and articles available at Pitts Library. Or experience singing Sacred Harp in the Atlanta area. (Visit http://www.atlantasacredharp.org/ to find a schedule, including the annual Emory singing in Cannon Chapel next February.)
