Research Carrel Policies in Pitts Theology Library

Research Carrels at Pitts

The third floor of the library hosts a room of assigned research carrels.  Carrels may be assigned to Candler students writing theses or independent studies, Emory ABD PhD students in any field writing a dissertation that draws heavily upon Pitts' collections, emeriti faculty, and visiting faculty.  There is an online application for use of a locker and carrels in this room; the online application opens August 1 of each year.  Researchers assigned a locker have prox card access to the room during the library's open hours.  Please review the room use policies below before requesting a space.

Application process for a locker and carrel in the study carrel room

  1. Applications are accepted online beginning August 1 for the coming academic year and assignments are made on a prioritized first come, first served basis.
  2. Study carrels are assigned on a one-semester basis for current students in Candler or for Emory ABD doctoral students writing dissertations on a topic that draws heavily on Pitts’ collections, depending on need.  At the time of application, applicants can specify whether or not a full-year assignment is desired, but assignments are guaranteed for a single semester only.  Several lockers and carrels are also available for visiting or emeriti faculty using Pitts’ collections.  Carrel assignments for visiting researchers may be shorter than a semester, depending on the length of the visit.  No reservation will last more than one calendar year without a need for reapplication.
  3. Seats are held for researchers in each of the following categories:
    1. Candler student writing a thesis or Candler students completing independent study papers  (Note: priority is given to Candler students writing theses)
    2. Emory ABD doctoral students writing dissertation on a topic that draws heavily on Pitts’ collections
    3. Visiting researchers sponsored by Emory and Emory emeriti faculty
